The annual church-wide retreat has been a highlight at FPCA for over 25 years. It is a time of fun, games, friends, and learning. New members who have attended say this is the best way to get connected at FPCA. Returning members love how the church uses the retreat to find a new way to knit together both the old and new. Children get the opportunity to build lifetime bonds with one another.

In addition to fun hikes, rock hopping, games, and connections, we will have a fantastic speaker this year–Eileen Guenther. Dr. Guenther is an author, teacher, speaker, and musician will speak about topics in her book, In Their Own Words: Slave Life and Power of Spirituals. Her session on Saturday morning  will be a beautiful blend of history, story, and music. We think this will be a beautiful combination of FPCA’s love of music and our commitment to racial justice.

Eileen has taught in seminaries, led in churches, and spoken around the world. She served six years as National President of the American Guild of Organists, the third woman to lead this organization since its founding in 1896. Eileen’s interest in world music has led her to serve as visiting lecturer at Africa University in Zimbabwe and to participate in UMC Global praise teams teaching music and worship in Uganda and Ivory Coast. South Africa, too, holds a special place in her heart and she has led eight groups of Wesley Seminary students on intercultural immersion trips there. (Rev. Shannon Jordan went with her through Wesley Theological Seminary where she was a professor in 2011.) Her time in South Africa has honed her passion for racial justice.
