Lent is a season where many of us make an extra effort to focus on our faith, on God, and God’s work in our world. This year especially many are finding their grounding in the power and peace of our loving God. Here are some options for connecting at First Presbyterian this Lent.

Worship: Our congregation worships each Sunday at 8:45 and 11:00. We will have an Ash Wednesday service on March 5 and a Maundy Thursday service on April 17. Both of these services will be preceded by a congregational meal.

Faith Formation: There will be meaningful faith formation conversations for all ages during Lent at 9:45 am.

  • Children will wonder together with their leaders about important stories in the life of Jesus.
  • Youth will continue their exploration of Mark.
  • Text Talk will discuss the weekly sermon scripture.
  • Faith & Fellowship, Patrick Johnson will lead a class called “Faithful Witness in a Fractured World.” What does it mean to be a faithful Christian in today’s fractured world? This five-week Lenten series will explore this question through scripture study, conversation, spiritual practices, and contemporary real-world connections. Join us around tables for thoughtful and practical discussion, relevant to every age and stage, about how we seek the common good and live out our faith in today’s world.

Quilling workshop: Remember the wonderful 3-D sheep and shepherds on display in the gallery throughout the Christmas season? Artist John Vruwink will offer a workshop on the craft used to create them, QUILLING, at the church on Saturday, March 29, from 10:30 – 1:00 ($10. materials fee). Contact life@fpcasheville.org to register by March 16.

Love AVL Day of Service and Learning Back by popular demand! We will eat lunch together (catered by Mamacitas), and then spend time serving and learning with groups in various locations: in-house service at FPCA, Haywood Street Congregation, river cleanup with AVL GreenWorks, and a poverty walk with Asheville Poverty Initiative. RSVP to life@fpcasheville.org for lunch and register for preferred service area by Sunday, March 9.

Babies Need Bottoms Drive! Leading up to our Love AVL Day of Service and Learning, we are holding a baby-supplies drive. All are invited to bring Diapers: size preemie (P), 5, 6, and 7 (note – other sizes NOT needed!); baby soap, baby lotion, and baby shampoo to the foyer, where we will be collecting these items until March 23. That afternoon, one of our Love AVL service opportunities will be an intergenerational packing of these items. Contact dgermer@fpcasheville.org with questions.

Creation Care in Lent The FPCA Creation Care Team is inviting the congregation to “Tread Lightly for Lent,” using this resource, a guided daily action challenge for individuals, couples, or families to participate in during the Lenten season.
