Saturday Sanctuary
First Presbyterian
Church: 253-1431
Michael Poulos, staff resource

Ami Greene, SS volunteer

Mission:
Because Homeward Bound’s AHOPE day shelter is closed on Saturday afternoons,
we are seeking to provide our neighbors a warm, safe place to visit during the
months of October through March. Located below our chapel, The Community Room
will be open from 1-4pm on Saturday afternoons. A group of volunteers will
work under the supervision of a Lead Volunteer to provide this important
ministry.
Shifts:
Shift times are: 12:30-2:30 (set up and host Community Room) and
2:30-4:30 (host Community Room and clean up)
The Lead Volunteer may ask you to work in the kitchen for a while, as well. Of
course, you can work both shifts if you so desire!

Please do not open to the general public before 1pm. If some of our neighbors
arrive early and would like to help set up the Community Room and the Lead
Volunteer is ok with it, that is fine, but please close the doors and re-open
at 1:00 after a brief prayer (see below).
Please let our neighbors know that the Sanctuary closes promptly at 4pm.
Again, if neighbors would like to stay and help clean up and the Lead
Volunteer is ok with it, they are welcome. After the closing prayer (see
below), please be sure the doors are locked and closed by 4:30. This will
ensure that volunteers can get home as planned and neighbors can go to get
meals and check in to shelters as necessary.
Arrival and Departure:
Please arrive on time.
Please park in the upper deck if you are driving.
Please arrive and depart through the Wallace Foyer. The entrance code will be
needed to enter.
Please ask neighbors to enter the Community Room through the double wooden
doors.
Upon arrival, your lead will tell you the code to the door between the
Community Room and the Fellowship Hall entrance. Please do not share
this code with others.
When you are not volunteering,
please do not use this code to enter the church via the door between the
Community Room and the Fellowship Hall.
Use of this door during off hours,
even with the code, will cause an alarm to sound and the police to be called.
While
You Are in the Community Room
Your job while in the Community Room is mainly to mingle with our neighbors as
appropriate, ensure that refreshments are available, and maintain a peaceful
feel to the space. This will usually be very easy and rewarding. The next
few sections of this handbook will provide you with some information about our
neighbors, ways to ensure their safety and some ways for you to be a good
listener. At the back of this handbook are some volunteer guidelines we ask
that you follow. Before you volunteer, we ask that you review these
guidelines and sign a log indicating that you have reviewed and understand
them. If you have not signed this form yet, please let your Lead Volunteer
know prior to volunteering.
Thank
You!
Thank you for giving your time and yourself to this ministry. We hope you
will find your time in the Community Room to be peaceful and rewarding. If
you have ideas for additional training, or if you would be interested in
having a volunteer support group, please let us know. Your anonymous feedback
will be requested at the end of each time you volunteer. Please help us to
improve the Saturday Sanctuary with your constructive feedback. And please
invite others who might also want to consider volunteering. All potential
volunteers will be required to attend a training session before service.
